INOCULATION OF TREES

Germinated seedling => Inoculation of seedling => Self sustaining colonisation of new root growth

At Gembrook we inoculate tree seedlings with DNA tested whole truffle fruit bodies (Tuber melanosporum, T. borchii or T. aestivum). The inoculation procedure is conducted as a sterile laboratory process soon after germination. Sterile media, containers and environmental conditions are absolutely essential to ensure invading, strongly competitive soil borne fungi such as Scleroderma and Hebeloma are excluded.

DNA testing of the inoculum is carried out by external certified laboratories as part of our quality assurance regime to avoid contamination from species such as T. brumale & T. indicum being present in the nursery stock. Every effort is made to ensure a high level of colonisation with the desired truffle species.

Nathan analysing roots for truffle colonisation

Analysing roots for colonisation

The seedlings are planted in tree tubes and grown on in a multi-span greenhouse for approximately sixteen months. Periodic microscopic sampling is carried out to check for truffle colonisation. Finally as part of the selection process, seedlings are checked before being released for despatch. Digital microscope images are available showing the colonised roots, and certification of inoculation levels of roots is available.

We also inoculate trees with Summer Truffle (Tuber aestivum) and Bianchetto {aka. Little White} (Tuber borchii)

Certification of Truffle Colonised Tree Seedlings

Certification is available (at additional cost) for all batches of seedlings. ATGA certification is performed by an independent laboratory.

This comprises of comprehensive destructive examination of a statistical sample from a batch of trees for overall seedling health, root colonisation levels with desired truffle species, followed by DNA analysis to confirm the seedlings are free from contaminants such as T.brumale and T.indicum.

The Certification Report for each batch is available from the grower, and also from the ATGA's website

Ordering Trees

All truffle colonised trees are grown to order and need to be forward ordered. Large orders need to be placed at least twelve months prior to delivery to be scheduled in the production plan. Orders are secured with a 20% deposit paid at the time of ordering. Limited ad hoc sales available.

Generally orders are placed at the time of liming and soil preparation. After amelioration with lime, it can take six to twelve months for the soil pH to reach the minimum requirement of 7.5.

There are smaller quantities available for ad hoc retail sales on a first come / first serve basis, best suited to gifts and hobby scale plantings. Supply without preorder is limited, especially for certified trees. Enquiries welcome.

Tuber magnatum (Italian White Truffle)

The famous white truffle that is very rare and has yet to produce truffles outside its wild forest habitat. It harvests in late autumn to early winter and attracts the highest culinary value of all truffles.

We have inoculated seedlings Quercus robur, Salix species, Populus species. (oaks, willows and poplars) Price on Application.

Please note although the trees are tested as being properly colonised with T.magnatum, the chance of production remains extremely uncertain. Can you be the first in the world to harvest a domesticated Alba White Truffle?
